On My Radar: A Few Tech-Related Items

I’m still feeling fuzzy from the semester and its ending, and am just getting around to my usual routine of clicking around the intrawebz. A few technology-related items that caught my eye:

  • I’m Out of the Office. No, Really. I Am. – This article poses the question: “Is the out-of-office message meaningless?” Not to me. I don’t have a problem not checking my email when I’m away from the office. I used to have my email synced to my phone…for about two hours and then I just wanted people to pelt me with an endless stream of gummi bears.
  • #Hashtags: Facebook’s missing link to pop culture – So Facebook is missing out on cool points because it doesn’t have a hashtag mechanism? I suppose this is true. One part of me says, “What the big deal? I use hashtags on Facebook anyway, even if they aren’t live.” But then again, hashtags are useful on Twitter, particularly when you’re trying to follow a conversation. Then again, I don’t use Twitter in the same way that I use Facebook, so I’m not sure that I would want the same hashtag functionality on Facebook as I have on Twitter.
  • Tools for Displaying Tweets at Your Event – Some new and useful tools that could come in handy for those of us in Student Affairs, who tend to plan lots of programs and events, and may want fresh ideas about how to integrate technology into our programs.
  • Facebook Rape Campaign Ignites Twitter: Boycott Threats From #FBrape Get Advertisers’ Attention – When Jaclyn Friedman, executive director of WAM (Women, Action, & the Media), Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, and Soraya Chemaly, feminist writer and activist, write an open letter to Facebook asking that it take action on “pages and images that explicitly condone or encourage rape or domestic violence or suggest that they are something to laugh or boast about.”

Like most of us, graduation has come and gone recently and now we have some breathing room. Maybe. Just Maybe – you have time for some TECH CRAFTS. Here’s a list of some great craft type items that you may feel compelled to work on this summer.

  1. Make fonts from your own handwriting.
  2. Add Pinterest mouse over buttons to your website’s photos.
  3. Create your own wallpapers for your desktop and laptop. Consider making an organizational wallpaper and share it with our readers.
  4. Wrap your phone charger in cuteness.
  5. Friendship Bracelets meet tangle-free headphones. Or just wrap your cords to make them cooler.
  6. Turn your cell phone photos into tiny Polaroid photo magnets!
  7. Make your own charging cell phone holder out of a shampoo bottle.
  8. If you can sew, make a circle zip earbud pouch keychain. Then make one for me.
  9. Cross-Stitch yourself a phone cover.
  10. There’s even a tech case kit for kids (or adults who like owls) to make.

Linkage Love: Pocket

If you’re anything like me (and I’m sure some of you are), you spend a good portion of your day checking up on social media sites or trolling around the internet looking for some new interesting piece of information. I tend to check my Twitter and Facebook as I ride the bus to my practicum (a short 20 minute trip), wait for a meeting to begin, or just to kill a few spare minutes before I head to class. And in that time – when I seem to have no time – I always find articles or stories that seem intriguing. But I never actually have enough time to read them. However, I was recently introduced to Pocket, my new favorite site/app/gift from God and great solution to my time-crunch problem.

Pocket

Pocket is like some sort of amazing cross between Evernote, Pulse, and Pinterest. Like Evernote, you can save PDFs and articles as you find them and access them across multiple mediums. Like Pulse, it categorizes those articles in a neat, organized fashion. And, like Pinterest, it does so at the click of a button on your search bar. Pocket will also save photos and videos, so you can save three different types of media at your finger tips (videos are especially great to save and watch later – I always find myself doing this with TED Talks).

While I know I have the option, it seems so silly to just keep book-marking pages and going back to them on my laptop periodically. Pocket lets you save articles from your smart phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop – and allows you to access them anywhere, as they are all connected. So now, instead of trying to speed read an article, I can save it with a click and browse them as please.

Blog Prompt: What did you accomplish this year during Spring Break?

Maybe you didn’t get an official Spring Break. I didn’t really. I had a day off here and there. My daughter’s daycare was closed for one day. Basically I had the office to myself for three days. It was wonderful and boring all at the same time. Here’s what I accomplished:

  • I was able to create an entire marketing campaign for a grant process that I finalized this semester. Logo, tagline, brochure – all done.
  • I was able to do some scheduling for our Facebook page. I put some time into populating our Pinterest page after putting together a Facebook advert so there would be new content everyday while trying to gain followers. A whole week’s worth of posts – done.
  • I downloaded two new apps to my iPhone.

First one – “Art My Kid Made“. I love it because it syncs with Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook, and those who have the app. Kinda like Instagram for Moms. App is free.

Second one – “Clip Book“. I’ve been doing tons of reading and thought something that would allow to pull passages, quotes, etc. from a book would be cool. It also syncs with Evernote. (I just went Evernote Premium so there’s no more holding back, I save everything now). Here’s a video to demo. App does cost $1.99

  • Worked on the script for our podcast on Wednesday. Will be doing a book review of the book “Social Works” , which if you follow that link you’ll someone else’s opinion right away.

Yes, my accomplishments were more work oriented. At home there were more fails than accomplishments although learning follows in both directions. There’s the Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Fail and the “Pork-Roast-when-I-meant-to-make-a-Pot-Roast” incident, not to mention the egg dying disaster when my four year regressed and decided to eat one of the dye pellets. *Sigh*

So please feel free to use this prompt to share what you accomplished. Maybe you accomplished watching a whole season of Game of Thrones. Great job! It’s all good.

Last year I told myself I wanted to make a life change. I wanted to be healthier. I wanted to be more active. Quite often in higher education (especially Residence Life and Student Activities) we are working long hours, eating a slice of leftover pizza from a student meeting, or eating dining food.  While staying healthy can be quite the challenge the following link have helped me to stay focused:

My Fitness Pal has been an awesome website and app for my iphone. This website has the information on calories for many food and brands of food. The app lets you track this information down. I have found that when I’m at my office I go onto this website or ones like it to pre-plan what I would like to eat for dinner. Viewing this site also let’s me pre-plan eating out at a restaurant. For instance when I glance at a menu what are items with fewer calories? My Fitness Pal has many restaurant’s food item on their site.

 

Spark People

I enjoy Spark People and the community it provides. There are many blogs and success stories that inspire me to do my best. Connecting with an ‘Average Joe’ on exercising is uplifting. They have many tools that help you track your weight/calories etc. There are apps for smartphones as well. Again, this site is best for people who are looking for a community.

I noticed this website when I was thinking of what songs to buy for my workout mix. They have lists of the top workout music from the past few years. What also made them stand out is their sections on snacks for vegan, gluten-free folks. While I am neither, my students are and this gave me options about what snacks might be appropriate to bring to a training. Lastly, I enjoy their free videos to view on new workouts.

Linkage Love: Being Happier

These past few months I have been on a mission to cultivate more happiness in my life. Generally, I am a positive, upbeat individual and tend to find the silver lining in all situations. I follow the mantras of “people are doing the best they can” and “you can’t change another person, but you can change your attitude.” But, I know that I can do better, and the following two sites have been helping me on my way to a greater happiness.

The Happiness Project chronicles one writer’s quest for everyday happiness over the course of an entire year. Each month Gretchen Rubin, NYC writer, tackels a new topic and sets resolutions for each subject. (Topics include boosting your energy, improving romantic relationships, strengthening parenting skills, etc.). While her focus is on the important themes in life, she improves her happiness through modification of small details. For example, one of the easiest ways to boost your energy everyday is to get eight hours of sleep. Shocking, I know. When you’re well rested, you’re a happier person. Improving romantic relationships? Stop nagging! If you want something done, sometimes it really is easier to do it yourself.

Gretchen encourages readers to create Ten Commandments of their own happiness. (Be Gretchen – one of hers; Be an Optimist Prime – one of mine). The key to her success, she says, is her resolutions chart. While it is easy to set resolutions, it is harder to hold yourself accountable. Her resolutions chart kept her focused on self-improvement each day.

My second site? Happier. A site/app devoted to promoting daily happiness and positivity.  Did you know that multiple studies have proven that writing down three happy things each day reduces anxiety, increases happiness, helps people make healthier choices, and gives one a better night’s sleep? Now you do!

Their mission is simple: to spread happiness. While the site explains the science behind their goal, the app puts it into action. Happier will prompt you in the morning, afternoon, and at night to write about something great that happened to you that day. Having a rough time at work? Wish you were doing something you loved? Easy fix. Write about it on the app. Share it with friends and family. Happier is basically a mobile social networking site that is all about positivity. No negative comments. No Debbie Downers. Just happiness.

The only downside at the moment at that it is not available for Android phone. For those of you with iPhones, I highly suggest you download this app! If nothing else, the confetti that rains down after you post will make you smile.

And now I leave you with this: start your own happiness project. It doesn’t have to be as elaborate as Gretchen’s or something you chronicle on your smart phone, it just needs to be an expression of the things that make you happy. Focus on the good and shake off the negative. Be happier!
